A plaque in the yard reads:

The Shaw House

Pioneer Seth Louis Shaw began construction of his home, Fern Dale, in 1854. The town was named after his first permanent home. The home, in its original condition, is a fine example of Gothic architecture. The house is a landmark and a source of pride to the community.
